Uganda Heart Institute (UHI)
The Uganda Heart Institute (UHI) is a specialized, public, tertiary care medical facility offering a comprehensive range of preventive, promotive, and clinical cardiovascular services as well as conduct cutting-edge research and training in cardiovascular science. The institute, established as an autonomous body by an Act of Parliament (The Uganda Heart Institute ACT, 2016), is the only National Referral Facility for heart diseases in Uganda. It handles over 20,000 patients annually. UHI started carrying out Open Heart Surgery in 2007 and to-date, over 7000 heart operations have been performed. In order to improve access to heart care, UHI is developing capacity to operationalize regional centers in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Regional Referral Hospitals.

Makerere University College of Health Sciences
Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS) was established in 1924 known as Makerere University Medical School, till 2007 when it became Makerere University’s premier constituent College. It is the oldest medical training University unit in East Africa; having been in the business of training medical and health professionals for over 80 years. This history has earned it an enviable position in Uganda and the East and Central African region.
In 2008 Makerere University began a major institutional change that led to the creation of MakCHS as the University’s first constituent college. This was an exploration of unchartered waters in the history of university governance in Uganda. MakCHS aims to improve the health of the people of Uganda through innovative teaching, research and provision of services responsive to societal needs.

RHD Research Collaborative in Uganda (RRCU)
The RRCU is a network of public health and clinician researchers committed to advancing global knowledge about Rheumatic Heart Disease through projects based in or informed by Uganda. The RRCU, based at the Uganda Heart Institute in Kampala, seeks to be a transformational force in the global reduction of RHD. In partnership with clinical programs, the RRCU conducts innovative, high-quality, collaborative research and research training programs across the RHD spectrum. RRCU leads the implementation of these research findings through evidence-based patient and public advocacy programs.
