Fahim Lugya holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) with merit from Makerere University, where he is currently pursuing a Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine. He serves as a Resident Physician in the Directorate of Internal Medicine at Mulago Hospital. In his clinical work, he delivers inpatient and outpatient care, drawing on prior experience managing cardiovascular cases across cardiac catheterization, intensive care, and emergency care units.
As a fellow under the Impact Masters Research Fellowship, Lugya will undertake a study titled, “Adherence to Secondary Prophylaxis and Its Determinants among Postoperative Rheumatic Heart Disease Patients at the Uganda Heart Institute.”
Through this research, he intends to assess adherence levels to secondary antibiotic prophylaxis and identify the key patient-reported barriers and determinants of non-adherence among postoperative RHD patients at the Uganda Heart Institute. His study will also evaluate the relationship between non-adherence, patient functional status, and adverse clinical complications such as heart failure, arrhythmias, and infective endocarditis. Ultimately, Lugya aims to leverage these findings to inform structured follow-up protocols, patient education initiatives, and decentralized prophylaxis delivery models to prevent recurrent acute rheumatic fever and post-surgical complications in Uganda.
