Immaculate Akullo holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from Makerere University. She currently serves as a Teaching Assistant in the Faculty of Medicine at Lira University, stationed on the Internal Medicine ward at Lira University Teaching Hospital. In this role, she supervises and teaches undergraduate medical students during clinical rotations, leads bedside tutorials, participates in daily patient care rounds, conducts ward assessments, contributes to quality improvement and academic programs, and participates in community health outreach.
As a fellow under the Impact Program, Akullo will undertake a study titled, “Prevalence and Association of Clinical Complications with Left Atrial Size Among Patients with Rheumatic Heart Disease at Uganda Heart Institute.”
Through this research, she intends to analyze data at the Uganda Heart Institute to evaluate the link between left atrial enlargement and major clinical complications—including atrial fibrillation, thromboembolism, pulmonary hypertension, and heart failure—among RHD patients. Her study aims to assess the prognostic value of left atrial size to facilitate early risk stratification and inform targeted clinical protocols, such as timely anticoagulation therapy and enhanced monitoring. Ultimately, Akullo seeks to generate peer-reviewed evidence, strengthen RHD research capacity, and support health initiatives aimed at reducing the burden of rheumatic heart disease in Uganda through early detection and intervention.
In her free time, Akullo is an avid gardener and plant collector who enjoys reading, writing, and collecting art, poetry, and unique items. She also enjoys traveling, nature walks, photography, and playing board games like Scrabble.
