Dr. Peter Kangwagye is a cardiologist at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH), the affiliate teaching hospital for Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST). He holds two masters’ degrees in Internal medicine (MMED) and Public Health. Recently, he completed a fellowship training in adult cardiology at the Uganda Heart Institute.

With a keen interest in Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD), Kangwagye runs MRRH’s RHD clinic every Friday. Apart from this, he also participates in activities of the department of internal medicine of MUST which include teaching both the undergraduate and postgraduate students; doing ward rounds and being on call to handle medical emergencies.

On the Impact Program, Dr. Kangwagye will explore ‘Early detection of atrial fibrillation among rheumatic heart disease patients in Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH).’

His future plan is to increase his involvement in communities in the 12 districts that make the catchment area for MRRH. This is driven by my desire to empower the local population in disease prevention and early detection.

Work aside, Dr. Kangwagye enjoys playing football, rally driving, swimming and spending time playing with his children.
